The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has suspended its two-week warning strike with immediate effect.
In a letter jointly signed by the Chairmen of the two unions, Mohammed Bello (SSANU) and Ibrahim Amadu (NASU), and addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the university, the unions said the decision followed an agreement reached between the JAC, the university management, and representatives of the Katsina State Government.
The letter recalled that the unions had on November 3, 2025, declared the strike to press home their demands before the state government. Following subsequent engagements, both parties reportedly reached a mutual understanding on all issues raised.
“In view of this development, the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU, UMYU Branch, after presenting the matter to their congresses, resolved to suspend the declared two-week warning strike with immediate effect to allow time for further discussion on the only item still in contention,” the statement read in part.
The unions also reaffirmed their commitment to constructive dialogue and cooperation with the university management while expressing appreciation for the intervention of the state government.
The Vice Chancellor, in a handwritten note on the document, described the suspension as “a welcome development,” and directed that the matter be communicated to the Honourable Commissioner for Higher Education for his awareness.
